oGreek Supreme Court’s Decision on Spouse’s Tax Residence Status

According to the very recent irrevocable judgment of the Greek Supreme Administrative Court (judgment nr. 1445/2016), the interpretation applied to date of an individual’s tax residence is reversed and a different approach regarding the filing of joint tax returns of spouses who are tax residents of different countries is formulated. More specifically:

        a) Spouses may be tax residents of different countries,

b) The Greek electronic tax registration system must adapt in order to support such separate tax residence status,

c) Greek Tax Authorities must substantiate their arguments when challenging the non-Greek tax resident status if individuals.

oDriving in Greece

Tourists and temporary residents, who plan to stay in Greece up to six (6) months, must know the following:

1. Driving vehicles without a legal driver’s licence is prohibited,

2. If the driving licence is issued by an E.U. country, it's recognised throughout the EU and can be used as long as:
it is valid
the driver is old enough to drive a vehicle of the equivalent category
it is not suspended or restricted and has not been revoked in the issuing country,

3. If the driving licence is issued by a country outside the European Union, then the driver should also carry an international driving permit.

Particularly on U.S. Citizens, the U.S. Department of State has authorized two organizations to issue international permits to those who hold valid U.S. driver’s licenses: The American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance. An international driving permit issued by AAA can be obtained through the mail.

Also, the American Citizen Services Section of the American Embassy has permit applications and the address for the office that handles overseas requests. Permit applications and instructions are also available on the AAA website (http://www.aaa.com/vacation/idpc.html).

oEvents and suggestions

The National Theatre and Vakhtangov Theatre – Rimas Tuminas presented on July 29th & 30th, 2016 “Oedipus Rex” by Sophocles, at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, which will also be presented on September 22nd, 2016 at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.

Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex, perhaps the most emblematic ancient drama of them all, is part of the Theban Cycle. According to the sources, it was first performed in 428 BC during the Peloponnesian War when the plague had carried off much of the Athenian populace. The work focuses on the individual in relation to their personal freedom, power, society and divine will.

In the context of its drive to collaborate with theatres both in Greece and abroad, the National Theatre of Greece has joined forces for the first time with the celebrated Vakhtangov Theatre to stage a production of Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex directed by Rimas Touminas. This fine co-production features both Greek and Russian actors with Viktor Dobronravov in the lead role.
The dramaturgical processing was undertaken by Elsa Andrianou, while the original music was written by Thodoris Abazis. The play will also be staged in Moscow this coming September.
